Inside Details As Peter Obi Gets Fidelity Bank's Support Over Vice Presidential Ambition
There are strong indications that Fidelity Bank, one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions has thrown its weight being the vice presidential ambition of its former chairman, Mr. Peter Obi.
According to an inside source who spoke on condition of anonymity, there was wild jubilation within the rank and file of the bank when news first filtered out that the former governor of Anambra State had been picked by the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, before the confirmation was made official by the presidential candidate and the party.
The bank, in spite of its being a public entity has never shied away from being well disposed to politics and some of its staff had in the past left its services to dive into the murky waters of politics. The current governor of Anambra State, Mr. Willie Obiano was a former director at Fidelity Bank and is reputed to have been handpicked and supported to succeed him by Mr. Peter Obi, although there is currently said to be no love lost between the two.
According to those in the know, a success at the polls for the PDP will augur very well for the bank as it is expected that it will enjoy a lot of patronage from the federal government. There are also tales flying around that the current managing director of the bank also has his eyes on politics and a vice presidential position for Mr. Obi will be a very solid foundation to start building on.
Mr. Obi boasts of a very enviable resume and is reputed to be one of the few Nigerian politicians with an intimidating academic record and sound knowledge of management. He is still on record as the youngest chairman in the history of Fidelity Bank. He is renowned for his shrewd and very prudent management of resources.
He has a number of firsts to his name as the Governor of Anambra State, amongst which are:
The first Governor to legally challenge a wrongful impeachment and was reinstated by the court.
The first Governor to serve two terms in both the new and old Anambra State, almost 40 years after its creation.
Mr. Obi was also the first Governor, whilst still in office, to be appointed a Special Adviser to the President.
